What are the most important thing artists can do to promote themselves?

Don’t spread yourself too thin – get on major players (Facebook, Bandcamp, etc..) and pick something to dig in to and make that your emphasis – a few examples being Tsu.co, SoundCloud, Spotify. Streaming is good for promotion – just not money unfortunately.

What has worked for you (companies, strategies, etc..)?

*Mailing list subscriptions

*My Twitter is very strong, but I have been putting a lot of energy into it for the past few years. Still a very small percentage that actually buy music. Getting set up on Bandcamp, as most people end up paying more than I offer the music for.

I would recommend AudioKite is great for getting feedback. I had a good experience with Earbits and Radio Airplay in the past but both of those services seem to have fallen off a bit.

In your opinion, has the digital age helped or hurt musicians?

In my experience, it has been much easier to gain audience and reach an audience (I have 10x more fans than when I was selling CD’s). Sales, however are 10% of what they once were.

Andrew Apanov is known as the Musician’s Gatekeeper as he works tirelessly with artists to build their brands (logos, websites, social media), education programs and a video series on how artists can get ahead in the industry.
What are the most important thing artists can do to promote themselves?

In the music business so many things are outdated, working in a traditional way but that just doesn’t work anymore. [Music fans] don’t just value the music anymore so you need to offer more interesting content to them. Don’t expect people just to follow you.

What has worked for you (companies, strategies, etc..)?

You really have to be creative, try things that haven’t been done before and engage the audience, outside of the music.

In your opinion, has the digital age helped or hurt musicians?

Things are good, and the industry is heading in a good direction. I don’t think the industry is the healthiest as every genre is so saturated. It’s difficult for artists to break through but definitely possible.
